OIT Frequently Asked Questions

Problem: Subscribe to a newsgroup on acme?
Entry: 0078

Solution:

The quickest and easiest way of changing your news subscriptions is without using your newsreader at all. Instead, edit the file ".newsrc" in your home directory, using your favorite editor (vi, pico, emacs, or whatever). Here's a sample piece of a .newsrc:
general: 1-1944,1951
git.general: 1-9052,9054-9075,9102-9103,9317,9328
git.announce: 1-2040,2042-2043
git.events: 1-205,400-401,403
git.ads: 1-5968
git.surplus: 1-63
ga.forsale: 1-5655
atl.jobs: 1-3392,3398-3399,3406,3419-3421,3424-3425
rec.food.cooking!
rec.food.sourdough!
rec.food.historic!
rec.food.cook! rec.food.restuarants! 1-2
git.oit.questions: 1-5384,5386-5388,5391-5405,5407-5417,5425,5428
git.unix.questions: 1-1894
...all newsgroups to which you are subscribed to are followed by colons (:), whereas the newsgroups you are not subscribed to are followed by exclamation points. All you would have to do to subscribe to "rec.food.sourdough" is to change the exclamation point into a colon(:). Conversly, if you decide that you no longer want to read "atl.jobs", you can change the colon(:) into an exclamation point(!). Similarly, using the editor, it becomes a simple job to rearrange the order of the newsgroups.
