Solution:
OIT recommends that you change your password every 30 days. You will be forced to change your password periodically. If you do not change your password when asked, it will expire and you will not be able to log in. Once a password expires, you will still be able to change it for 21 days. You may also be able to change your password beyond this time if you have previously set up hinted login at passport.gatech.edu.
When choosing a password, there are a few restrictions you should be aware of.
- Passwords are case sensitive.
- Passwords must contain between 7 and 23 characters.
- Passwords must contain more than one character class*
- You cannot reuse any of your most recent passwords.
* Kerberos (used for GT Accounts) recognizes three character classes (letters, numbers, symbols) and requires your password to contain at least two of them. Active Directory recognizes four character classes (uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, symbols) and requires your password to contain at least three of them. If you intend to set both your GT Account and GT Active Directory passwords to the same value, you will be subject to Active Directory's stricter rules.
In addition to these rigid restrictions, there are a few guidelines you must follow in order to be in compliance with Georgia Tech's Computer and Network Usage Policy.
- Do not write your password down.
- Do not share your password with anyone. Not your secretary, not your parents... not even OIT.
- Avoid using people's names (especially your own), your GT Account username, and any word that can be found in a dictionary.
