Solution:
WARNING: The Office of Information Technology supports only the configuration of Outlook Express for the specific purpose of connecting to our servers. For problems or questions concerning its use, please consult the application's Help menu or Microsoft's web site.
- Start Outlook Express.
- On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
- In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.
![]()
- In the Display Name box, type the name that you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.
- In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account that you are using (Example: "gt9999z@mail.gatech.edu" or "firstname.lastname@dept.gatech.edu"), and then click Next.
- Under E-mail Server Names, choose either IMAP or POP3 as the type of incoming mail server.
- In the Incoming mail server box, type "imap.mail.gatech.edu" if you chose IMAP above, or "pop.mail.gatech.edu" if you chose POP3.
- In the Outgoing mail server box, type "smtp.mail.gatech.edu". Click Next.
- In the Account name box, enter your Prism ID (Example: "gt9999z" or "zz999"). Type your Prism password in the Password box, then click Next.
- Click Finish.
- In the Internet Accounts window, highlight the mail account you just created and click Properties.

- Click the Servers tab. At the bottom, under Outgoing Mail Server, check the box labeled My server requires authentication.
![]()
- Click the Advanced tab. Check both of the boxes that say This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
Outlook Express should automatically choose the correct port number for each service, but the correct numbers are as follows.![]()
Service Port Number IMAP (with SSL) 993 POP3 (with SSL) 995 SMTP (with SSL) 25*
* Some ISPs do not allow connections to computers outside of their network on port 25. See the trouble-shooting information below for possible alternatives.
- If you chose to use IMAP, you might want to configure the optional settings on the IMAP tab as well. The Root folder path should be left blank if you are migrating to the new Zimbra-based mail system.
Be sure the folders specified under Special Folders correspond to the folders you use in other IMAP clients (such as webmail) and that these folders exist.- Click OK to close the Properties dialogue, then click Close to close the Internet Accounts window.
Trouble sending mail
If you are able to receive mail, but are having trouble sending, you can try making one or more of the following changes to the settings. Be forewarned that you may not be able to get it to work, no matter what you do.
- On the Servers tab, click under Outgoing Mail Server and manually enter your username and password.
- Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) port number to 465 or 587.
- Increase the Server Timeouts setting on the Advanced tab.
- Uninstall applications that might be interfering with the connection. Examples of this are ZoneAlarm and anti-virus software that monitors your e-mail traffic at the network level. Disabling these programs doesn't always work. The only way to know for sure is to uninstall them.
- If you are off campus, using a "Cable/DSL Router", and your ISP requires you to use PPPoE, you may need to adjust your MTU setting. Since this is an issue between your ISP and 3rd party network equipment in your house, it is not supported by OIT, but you can find some helpful information at DSL Reports.
- Use your ISP's SMTP server instead of "smtp.mail.gatech.edu". This almost always works, but it may be inconvenient on a laptop that moves around between different networks.
- On the Advanced tab, under Server Port Numbers, uncheck the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box.
- On the Servers tab, under Outgoing Mail Server, uncheck the My server requires authentication box.
- Consult your ISP's web site or call them to determine the hostname of their SMTP server.
- Use a different e-mail client, such as Thunderbird or Eudora.
