Problem: Configuring Eudora for Windows to use Spectrum
Entry: 0264

Solution:

Start the Eudora program, and go to the top menu bar and select [Tools] and then [Options]. A screen similar to the image below will appear. Choose each illustrated category in the left pane and make the configuration changes displayed in the following screen shots.

Under Getting Started, complete the fields as shown on the right:

Faculty/Staff should use their e-mail address (firstname.lastname@department.gatech.edu) in the Return address field.

For Mail Server (Incoming) you should enter either 'pop.mail.gatech.edu' or 'imap.mail.gatech.edu'.

For SMTP Server (Outgoing), enter smtp.mail.gatech.edu. This setting will work whether you are connecting from campus or off-campus. Also, make sure to check the Allow authentication box below that (see circled item in the capture to the right).

Under Checking Mail:

Modify the settings circled in yellow as needed. A value of 10 minutes or greater is recommended for email checking interval, as setting this number too low may cause heavy loads on the servers to slow down your connection. To avoid receiving error messages from Eudora when no network connection is detected (e.g., your modem is not dialed in to your ISP), check the box "Don't check without a network connection".

In order for Eudora to establish a secure connection with Spectrum, the Secure Sockets when Receiving section circled in red must be set to Required, Alternate Port.

Under Incoming Mail:

The options circled in red should match your choice of POP or IMAP entered in the Mail Server (Incoming) field under Getting Started. The settings below Server Configuration should be tailored to suite your email requirements, but the default settings should suffice in most configurations.

Under Sending Mail:

In order for Eudora to establish a secure connection with Spectrum, the Secure Sockets when Sending section circled in red must be set to Required, STARTTLS.

NOTE: Some ISPs have restrictions of the type of outbound mail connections that are allowed. To send mail from off campus, you may have to change this setting to Required, Alternate Port and/or check the box next to Use submission port (587).

With the above settings, you should be able to successfully use Eudora to read your e-mail on the Spectrum Mail System.
