OIT Frequently Asked Questions

Problem: How do I filter spam from my GT Spectrum inbox?
Entry: 0318

Solution:

All messages delivered to your GT Spectrum inbox will contain a custom header called X-GT-Spam-Rating. The value of this header will be anywhere from 0 to 10 '#' characters. The more #s there are, the more likely it is that this message is spam. Five or more #s, which indicates a spam rating of 50 or higher, is a good base-line. To filter these messages into another folder as they arrive on the server, follow the instructions below.

Spectrum

NOTE: These instructions will enable filtering on the Spectrum servers. If you check your mail using POP3, you should consider filtering messages in your mail client instead. (You will not be able to access the JUNK folder via POP3 and could easily lose track of the messages stored there.) Instructions for several clients are available elsewhere in this FAQ.

  1. Go to the Spectrum Mail Tools page
  2. Click on the link to "Websieve"
  3. Log in using your GT Account
  4. Click [View/Edit Rules]
  5. You should see a rule with the following text:
IF 'X-GT-Spam-Rating' contains '#####' THEN File Into 'INBOX.JUNK'
  6. Change the Status drop-down for this rule to "ENABLED"
  7. Click the Save Changes button
  8. Click [LOGOUT]

New Spectrum

  1. Log in to the New Spectrum web client at mail.gatech.edu
  2. Click the Preferences tab
  3. Click the Mail Filters tab under Preferences
  4. Click New Filter
  5. Enter a name for the filter, such as "Catch Junk"
  6. Choose "all" conditions
  7. Choose "Header Named"
  8. Enter "X-GT-Spam-Rating"
  9. Choose "contains"
  10. Enter "#####"
  11. Under actions, choose "File into folder"
  12. Click Browse… and choose Junk
  13. Click OK
  14. Click Save

Messages that arrive with a spam score of 50 or higher will be saved in the Junk folder from now on instead of your Inbox. You should examine your Junk folder on a regular basis to make sure you don't miss legitimate messages and to avoid going over quota. Messages will be purged from your Junk folder automatically after 30 days.
