How to create or change a customized email alias in Office 365

What is an email alias?
An email alias is a way for a GT mailbox to have multiple email addresses deliver to it. Everything sent to an email alias is received by the mailbox that the alias is assigned to in GT's mail system.  By default, all mailboxes are assigned a GTAccount@gatech.edu address and customers may select one custom @gatech.edu alias.

Problem

When a customer tries to sign into http://mail.gatech.edu, they receive the error: 

Sorry, but we're having trouble signing you in. 

The user account <account identifier> does not exist in the 482198bb-ae7b-4b25-8b7a-6d7f32faa083 directory. To sign into this application, the account must be added to the directory.

Why did I receive the error "Something went wrong - We couldn't find a mailbox for this recipient"?

Problem

Some customers signing into the URL http://mail.gatech.edu attempting to access Outlook on the web may receive the error:

Something went wrong.

We couldn't find a mailbox for this recipient.  Either they don't have a mailbox or don't have a license assigned.
